Mayor's Open Space Task Force Meets at the Newly Renovated Bayview Opera House to Discuss Open Space Acquisition

After discussing the state of open space in San Francisco in January, the Task Force reconvened on March 13th at the Bayview Opera House to discuss how San Francisco will meet the open space challenges of the future, specifically addressing open space acquisition. Joined by over 60 of the brightest minds in urban planning, design, and development, Co-Chair Mike Farrah welcomed participants to the Bayview Opera House, and expressed his appreciation for each Task Force member’s continued commitment and hard work in helping craft an Open Space Action Plan. Director Farrah highlighted how projects like the Opera House represent the spirit of revitalization and community the Task Force can also help to achieve through its work. Director Vernon Grigg provided a brief overview of the history of the 120 year old Opera House, and the public/private partnerships that helped develop the space into a unique community-based theater, movie house, and art and education center. An ongoing capital campaign to be completed in 2009 will transform outdoor cement areas into park and open space for outdoor theater events.

Astrid Haryati, Mayor Newsom's new Director of Greening gave a presentation about lessons learned and best practices from Chicago. Director Haryati discussed lessons, challenges, and opportunities learned from Chicago's open space planning efforts. Emphasis on space that is open, active, green and connected drove completion of a five-step planning process. The process began with development of an open space plan defining needs based on national open space standards and level of service.

After Haryati's talk, the Task Force broke into five groups to discuss the different components of acquisition: 1) Principles, 2) Priorities, 3) Tools, 4) Implementation, and 5) Community Engagement. The products of these workgroups will inform the direction of the Task Force. Guiding principles included: accessibility, safety, urgency, integration and connectivity, leveraging existing assets, and reflective of the geography of San Francisco.
